The Optometric Oath: Keeping Optometry in Focus

This month is my 30th anniversary of becoming an optometrist!

The optometric oath that we pledge at graduation is still something I believe with all my heart.

I’ve always been particularly fond of the line “I WILL do my utmost to serve my community, my country and humankind as a citizen as well as a doctor of optometry”

It always felt like the vow of a Marvel superhero team.

The pledge we all take is about caring for our patients putting their needs above all else and being accepting of diverse populations

Simply it’s about how you practice, not where you practice.

For 30 years I’ve seen an unfortunate animosity between private practice Optometrists and doctors who work in more corporate settings. While we let ourselves be distracted by this divide. The real disruptors to our profession have made a foothold. From deregulation of contact lenses, and refractions being allowed outside of a comprehensive exam to Ophthalmologists blocking our attempts at an expanded scope of practice.

There are 38 million people in Canada and only 6000 optometrists. Our goal should be educating Canadians about the importance of eye exams. Making more people aware of the myopia pandemic. Expanding our scope of practice and insurance parity.

No matter where you practice, transforming people’s lives by giving them clear vision and keeping their eyes healthy is optometry’s superpower. It’s why I still love seeing patients. For those of you graduating this month, you’ve chosen a wonderful profession.

Bailey Nelson knows that optometry and the comprehensive eye exam are the most important part of what we do. It’s why we have optometrists in every store, in four countries, from our first to our recently opened 100th! Our optometrists take the time to care and connect with their patients. They treat their patients with their amazing skills, clinical judgement and kindness, while surrounded by the positive inclusive environment of a Bailey Nelson.
